Biography

Sebastiaan Eben van Yperen (1995) is currently working as a second kappellmeister at Staatstheater Augsburg. Where he will conduct Carmen, and die Lustige Weibe von Windsor among other things. He will be the first second kappellmeister to ever conduct a premiere in the big house which will be: L'Incoronazione di Poppea. 

Last season he assisted Kent Nagano at the L’opera national de Paris with a production of Pascal Dusapin. 

He has conducted several Dutch orchestras such as Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Phion, and

Asko Schoenberg, and has assisted conductors like Kent Nagano Ed Spanjaard, Karel Deseure, Toby Purser,Otto Tausk, and Antony Hermus, among others.

He was awarded the highest prise in the first international F. Fricsay competition with jury

members consisting of Vasily Petrenko and Herman Baümer among others.

He made his opera debut with assisting Karel Deseure at the Dutch National Opera Academy in a

production of 'Little Women' by Mark Adamo.

Sebastiaan has since gone on to assist Deseure, Tausk, Hermus and many others on multiple

other projects, including 'L’heure Espagnol, La voix Humaine' at Opera Zuid, the John's Passion

at Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Fidelio at the Nationale Reisopera and much more.

He studied orchestral conducting at the conservatory of Amsterdam with Ed Spanjaard and Karel

Deseure and Sebastiaan has expanded his studies by a study exchange to the Royal Academy of

Music, into the class of Sian Edwards, and has participated in masterclasses such as with

conductor Karina Canellakis and Colin Metters.

 

Sebastiaan has previously earned a degree in composition at the conservatory of Amsterdam with

Joel Bons, Richard Ayres, Willem Jeths, Wim Hendrickx and Jorrit Tamminga. His pieces were

premiered in concert halls such as Tivoli Vredenburg, Muziekgebouw aan ‘T IJ and the Dutch

National Opera & Ballet. His compositional language is praised for its craftsmanship and

natural musicality.
